Charity explorer

How it works

Unlike the other tool, this tool is designed for browsing. It's not perfect, but it lets you see what's going on directly.

  1. We show NGOs and the money that flows between them. Money comes in from the left, goes out to the right. The NGOs are drawn with trapezoids so the left side is proporitional to the incoming grants while the right side is proporitional to the grants going out to other NGOs.
  2. US Government is treated as the ultimate donor. Default shows the 5 largest "root" donors.
  3. Money flows are scaled so large flows don't dwarf small ones, you can adjust scaling up or down.
  4. Octogons (aka stop sign) are NGOs that don't have any outflows to other NGOs, presumably spend it all.
  5. Gray "plus" circles roll up grants to keep the graph from being overwhelming. Click the pimples to see 3 more from that side, or click the NGO to see 3 more from both sides.
  6. Command/Windows click on a node to bring up a control panel with more controls and cross links.
  7. In the control panel, Focus will remove all the other NGOs, Remove will remove just that NGO.
  8. Choose any of the starting points below and click away.
  9. Default: USG and the next four largest roots.
